KS3 English

Overview

KS3 students at Carter follow a structured and varied programme of study in each of the three years. With the government’s initiative to remove levels at KS3, the English Department has adopted the United Learning approach to learning and assessment whereby students are measured against Key Performances Indicators (KPIs).

Curriculum Content

All schemes of work have been carefully planned to prepare students for the new, more rigorous GCSEs in English Language and Literature. In each year, students will study a contemporary novel, a Shakespeare play, poetry, a 19th century novel and a play. Alongside this literary study, students will focus on key writing skills and learn vital grammar and vocabulary.

Assessment

At the end of each half-term, students are assessed for reading, writing, speaking and grammar against specific KPIs. Those students who do not meet the required KPIs will receive targeted intervention to enable them to do so.

Homework

Students are provided with a challenging homework booklet each half-term and are expected to complete one task a week. The homework tasks compliment the programme of study and provide opportunities for students to consolidate their learning at home.

KS4 English

Overview

We are using the new AQA specifications for English Language and English Literature. With the abolition of coursework comes a new challenge: preparing students for two terminal examinations in English Language and two in Literature. The course requirements for Literature are that students study a Shakespeare play, a 19th century novel, contemporary prose or a play and poetry. The English Language course includes reading fiction and non-fiction texts from different time periods and writing for different purposes and audiences.

Assessment

At the end of each half-term, students answer a GCSE question for English Language and English Literature based on their learning for that period. There are no longer tiered papers at GCSE so all students take the same exam. Interventions are then put in place to support students who need it.

Homework

Students are provided with a challenging homework booklet each half-term and are expected to complete one task a week. The homework tasks compliment the programme of study and provide opportunities for students to consolidate their learning at home.
