Resistant Materials
What is Resistant Materials?
This examination course involves Designing and making a product in wood, metal, plastic or any Combination of these materials.
It is open to students (male and female) who enjoy designing, making and being in a workshop environment. Most importantly you must commit yourself to working in a safe and Responsible manner.
Students will
- Learn to design and work with a variety of materials including woods, metals and plastics.
- Design innovative and exciting products for themselves and others.
- Learn to work with skill and safety in a practical environment.
- Develop problem-solving skills.
- Gain expertise in using a variety tools and machinery.
- Further their understanding of materials and processes through theory work and first hand use.
- Learn to manage themselves and work to tight deadlines.
Coursework
Year 10
Skills-based focussed practical tasks and theory. Currently projects include mechanical toys, metal spinning top, centre punches, brazing and welding.
Year 11
Major ‘Design and Make’ project. Based around furniture, storage or display project.
Final Exam/Assessment
Coursework design and make project, equating to 60% of the final grade.
The coursework is split into 2 sections – practical (60%) and design folder (40%).
One written examination worth remaining 40% of the final grade.
