KS3 Science

Year 7 & 8

The Curriculum

In Year 7 and 8 students follow a course linked to the National Framework for Key Stage 3 Science. Throughout the different years they will study the following modules:

• Cells, tissues and organs

• Reproduction and
   variation 7BR

• Ecological relationships and
   classification 8BE 

• Digestion and nutrition 8BD

•Biological systems and
  processes 9BB

• Plants and photosythesis

• Particles 7CP

• Chemical Reactions 7CC 

 • Materials and the Earth

• The periodic table 8CP

 • Reactivity 9CR

• Energetics and rates 9CE

 •Forces and motion 7PF

• Energy 7PE

• Light and space 8PL

• Electricity and magnetism

 • Sound waves 9PS

• Forces in action 9PF

• Matter 9PM

Students develop their investigative and practical skills throughout all the topics they study.


Students are assessed regularly. They are assessed through end of topic tests or in class assessed tasks. The students are assessed against Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s). The assessment is used to check understanding and address misconceptions so that learning in the classroom and at home will aid progress.

KS4 Science

Year 9, 10 & 11

The Curriculum

All students will embark on their GCSE Science course(s) in year 9

The department offers two different routes through their GCSEs in the traditional sciences which cover a broad spectrum of scientific concepts. 

  • Double Science
  • Triple science

All students study a minimum of double Science, which awards them two GCSE's.

Science GCSE content:

Here at Carter we study the AQA specification GCSE Science. This is all terminally assessed in Year 11. Students complete a number of required practical’s for the course as well as other practical’s that will enhance their learning. Of these, three assessments are 1 hour written tests set in May of each year. The course consists of Biology, Chemistry & Physics units, studied across Y9-11.
